Description

Free Screening + Conversation
Join NewFest, American LGBTQ+ Museum, and New-York Historical Society for a screening & conversation

Directed by Emmy Award-nominated Ryan White, this powerful short documentary focuses on J.C. Leyendecker, one of the most prominent artists of his time whose story is now largely forgotten. Forced to keep his sexuality a secret, his coded imagery spoke directly to the gay community and laid the foundation for LGBTQ+ representation in advertising today.

The post-screening conversation will address topics that explore advertising in social and visual culture, while spanning the past, present, and future of LGBTQ+ representation within the advertising industry and beyond.

Panelists include Jari Jones, model and activist; Ignacio Darnaude, art writer, lecturer, and film producer; and Devon Hong, creative director; and will be moderated by Marcos Chin, illustrator.

Join us prior to the program to view the exhibition in the Robert H. and Clarice Smith South Gallery (1st Floor).
