Featuring three electric short films, this vigorous program charts time periods and the American landscape — from San Francisco to New York City to New Orleans — and shines a spotlight on trans and nonbinary stories from the past and present while looking towards the future.   The in-person screening on 3/13 will be followed by an extended Q&A conversation with filmmakers and featured talent.

COMPTON’S ‘22 Dir. Drew de Pinto, USA, 2023, 17 min

Three years before Stonewall, trans sex workers and drag queens rioted against police violence at Compton's Cafeteria. In a poetic intergenerational dialogue, contemporary trans artists interpret oral histories from the legendary Compton’s Queens. MnM Dir. Twiggy Pucci Garçon, USA, 2023, 16 mins

An exuberant portrait of chosen sisters Mermaid and Milan, two emerging runway divas in the drag ballroom community. Celebrating their joy, siblinghood, and unapologetic personas, the film explores the power and beauty of being nonbinary in a community that can be both liberating and compartmentalized around gender. HOUSE OF TULIP Dir. Cydney Tucker, USA, 2023, 24 mins

Follow two Black trans activists as they run for office and work to build Louisiana’s first housing refuge that provides residency for trans and gender non-conforming residents. We’ll follow the founders as they fight to use their organization to protect and build community in a state with one of the highest gun-related murder rates in the country. Their journeys will highlight the dangerous yet beautiful reality of what it means to be Black trans women in the deep South.
