Dishy documentary about London’s post-punk era and the outsized personalities that shaped the late 1970s New Romantics art movement

Description

Rising from the ashes of the punk revolution, a fresh subculture of flamboyant artists and fashionistas emerged on the streets of East London in the late 1970s. Known as the New Romantics, they came dressed to the nines — be it for a night out on the town or just to pop down to the local shops — in a styled, genderbending response to the anarchistic “anti-fashion” of the previous generation.

Repositioning the New Romantics as an art movement rather than a fleeting pop-cultural one, director Kevin Hegge celebrates the outsized personalities (Boy George, Spandau Ballet, Derek Jarman) that defined the era while shining a long-overdue spotlight on its lesser-known, yet equally influential, contributors. Nearly a decade in the making, TRAMPS! delivers the kind of invigorating fun you might get spending an all-nighter with your favorite queer elder.
