Film Programmer (Year-Round)

NewFest, New York’s leading LGBTQ+ film and media organization, is seeking a part-time, year-round Programmer to help support the organization’s year-round programs. 

Founded in 1988, NewFest is New York’s largest presenter of LGBTQ+ film & media and the largest convener of LGBTQ+ audiences in New York City. NewFest’s mission is to give voice and visibility to the full scope of the LGBTQ+ experience through year-round film screenings and events, including the annual New York LGBTQ+ Film Festival. NewFest creates spaces and conversations that have the capacity to open minds, shift cultural bias, and create positive change. NewFest is dedicated to bringing together filmmakers and audiences to strengthen  a community that encompasses the wide range of representations of the LGBTQ+ experience. 

The Programmer will report directly to the Director of Programming, and work in conjunction with the rest of the year-round team to ensure the timely creation, input, and delivery of the following duties and responsibilities: 

Relevant Year-Round programs and festival screening events (in-person and virtual):

  • LGBTQ+ Movie Club and Education Screening Programs with the NYC Department of Education (March – May)

  • Queering the Canon (April)

  • NewFest Pride (May/June)

  • The New York LGBTQ+ Film Festival (October)

  • Additional partner/sponsored/advance screenings (throughout the year)


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide curatorial, programmatic and organizational support for NewFest’s year-round in-person and virtual programming 

  • Research and track films, filmmakers, distributors, and festivals relevant to NewFest’s mission of presenting LGBTQIA+ film, television, and media

  • Communicate with – and develop and maintain relationships – with key film community professionals, including filmmakers, sales agents, studios, publicists, distributors, etc. while developing and maintaining

  • Participate in screening and evaluating films and submissions for year-round programming, initiatives, and partner presentations

  • Attend weekly interdepartmental meetings and work within databases, communication channels, and systems to fulfill administrative needs related to year-round programming

  • Support year-round tracking and replies to emails and requests that come in through the Programming department

  • Support booking and confirming of programmed titles, including negotiation of fees and talent coordination for both in-person and virtual events

  • Work with NewFest staff to coordinate relevant programming needs and deliverables (film assets, talent coordination, etc) for NewFest’s year-round programming and events

  • Brainstorm and support outreach to – and confirmation of – potential special guests, including Q&A panelists and moderators

  • Participate in strategic planning, including developing and meeting audience attendance goals, including brainstorm of relevant community organizations and potential partners

  • Help promote NewFest, its events and programs by articulating the mission and guiding principles of NewFest by collaborating with Marketing/Communications, Development, and Publicity departments to strategize, publicize and promote year-round screenings and special events

  • Prepare and present engaging film introductions and Q&As for select year-round events, both in-person and virtually

  • Attend industry screenings and film events as a representative of NewFest

  • Other duties as assigned 


Preferred Experience and Qualifications:

  • 3+ years experience in film programming and related work

  • Comprehensive knowledge of film and the LGBTQ+ community 

  • Comprehensive understanding of NewFest’s mission, values, strategy and programming

  • Strong communication skills, including public speaking

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities with competing and unpredictable schedules

  • Relationship management skills across a broad range of communities and stakeholders

  • Expert social skills and awareness of protocols

  • Considerate and analytical thinking, as well as problem solving


Part-time work schedule: 

20 – 30 hours/week, with a combination of in-office, onsite event, and remote work 

Compensation Range: $25 – $35/hour
