Dir. Alexandre Moratto, Brazil, 2018, 71 mins
New York Premiere
Winner of multiple festival jury awards, as well as the Independent Spirit Award for “Someone to Watch” for director Alexandre Moratto, SOCRATES is a powerful and beautifully shot portrait of a 15-year-old living on the margins of São Paulo’s coast who must survive on his own in the wake of his dedicated mother’s passing. As he faces isolation because of his sexuality, his search for a decent, worthy life reaches a breaking point. Produced by Ramin Bahrani (99 HOMES, GOODBYE SOLO), SOCRATES is the debut feature film from 29-year-old Brazilian-American filmmaker Moratto and the first feature produced by the Querô Institute in Brazil where it was co-written, produced, and acted by at-risk teenagers from local low-income communities, with the support of UNICEF. Above all, SOCRATES is a robust call to the power of both collaboration and storytelling.
