It’s the summer of 1984, you’re seventeen, you live in the Mid-West, and you’re pretty sure you’re gay. So begins director David Moreton and writer Todd Stephens’ refreshing debut feature film–the story of Eric, a musically gifted and charming soon-to-be high school senior who gets a little lost on his post-pubescent exploration of sexuality.
While flipping burgers with his best friend Maggie at the local amusement park restaurant, Eric meets a host of summer-jobbing buddies including his first potential beau and his brassy boss, delightfully played by Lea DeLaria. With its inspired mid-80s stylings & soundtrack, accomplished script, and vivacious performances, EDGE OF SEVENTEEN is a marvelously entertaining and honest film that truly captures the heady mix of bewilderment, trepidation, and excitement that is felt when coming out.
