Boys Shorts (10/24)

October 24, 2016 @ 3:00 pm

| $16

Deftly mixing narrative storytelling, archival footage and hybrid documentary, the films in our Boys program are perceptive, dynamic snapshots of overcoming some of life’s biggest hurdles: coming of age, coming out, heartbreak, and loss. These six films offer a sweeping, diverse representation of queer men and the challenges they face from the 1970s to present.

Q&A with filmmakers and select cast to follow

Radical Fairy Prince
Dir: Bobby R. Poirier, US, 2016, 9 mins
When filmmaker Bobby R. Poirier found a roll of 8mm film – shot in the ’70s by queer radicals – in a Venice Beach closet, he reconstructed it into a freewheeling, anarchic romance that preserves the spirited freedom of the footage.

Dir: Anthony Doncque, France, 2016, 26 mins
Anthony Doncque travels back to his teenage years, documenting his fraught relationship with his father with a mix of archival Hi-8 footage from his youth and tender, empathetic narrative filmmaking. In French with English subtitles.

Reluctantly Queer
Dir: Akosua Adoma Owusu, Ghana/US, 2016, 9 mins
In a letter to his mother, Kwame Edwin Otu attempts to reconcile the differences in his identity as a Ghanian, an American, and a queer man while Akosua Adoma Owusu observes on stark, gorgeous Super 8 film.

According to My Mother
Dir: Cathy Yan, US, 2015 18 mins
Daniel and his mother only have each other, but Daniel’s mom is a stern, Korean, devout Christian while Daniel is a gay New Yorker struggling to make it as an actor. Cathy Yan’s film is a biting and funny portrait of a perfectly tense familial relationship.

The Exterminator
Dir: Eli Rarey, US, 2015, 13 mins
A surreal infestation and a surprisingly empathetic exterminator set the stage for Eli Rarey’s tender, supremely goofy take on heartbreak and recovery.

You Deserve Everything
Dir: Goran Stolevski, Australia, 2015, 19 mins
A doctor’s flippant relationship with the hospital’s Arabic translator turns out to be much more complicated, and have much larger consequences, than either of them planned for.
