Special Screening

Punks (2000)

Wednesday May 30 @ 8:00 pm
SVA Theatre, 333 West 23rd Street
New York, NY 10011 United States

Dir: Patrik-Ian Polk, USA, 2000, 104 mins
Join the co-hosts of Nancy from WNYC Studios, Kathy Tu and Tobin Low, for a rare 35mm screening of this rediscovered gem of queer cinema!
Celebrated for its candid and realistic depiction of African-American gay men, the groundbreaking PUNKS premiered at Sundance in 2000 and won awards on the film festival circuit before becoming mostly undistributed and unavailable to see anywhere. Focusing on four friends navigating the dating world to find their mythical Mr. Rights, this vivacious debut film from writer-director Patrik-Ian Polk is an outrageously spirited ensemble comedy with verve and wit. Unprecedented in the way it captures black gay life and romance, PUNKS also explores universal aspects of friendship in dynamic and surprising ways.

SATURDAY CHURCH Community Screening

Wednesday June 13 @ 6:00 pm
Screening Room at The Center, 208 West 13th Street
New York, 10011 United States

Dir: Damon Cardasis, USA, 2017, 82 mins
Presented in partnership with Mayor’s Office of Media & Entertainment (MOME) and the New York City Department of Youth and Cultural Development (DYCD)
Living alongside his mother, younger brother, and conservative aunt, Ulysses–a shy and effeminate 14-year-old boy–is coping with new responsibilities after the death of his father while also struggling with questions about his gender identity. He finds an escape by creating a world of fantasy filled with dance and music, complete with exhilarating scenes that explode with self-expression. Ulysses’ journey of self-exploration takes a turn for the better when he encounters a vibrant transgender community, who take him to “Saturday Church,” a program for LGBTQ youth. Ulysses manages to keep his two worlds apart; appeasing his aunt and discovering his passion for the NYC ball scene, and voguing, until his double life is revealed. Ulysses must find the courage to be who he truly is, all while risking losing those he cares about most.
Talkback with writer/director Damon Cardasis and lead actor Luka Kain
